Maya was eleven years old and loved to learn. She had a big math test one morning and a stack of brightly colored notes on her desk. "I will study all night," Maya whispered. "I must remember everything!"

As the clock ticked and the moon climbed higher, a tiny figure crawled out from under her pencil box. It was Tired Brain—small, sleepy, and wearing fuzzy slippers. Tired Brain yawned so wide a little paper star fell from his mouth.

"Maya," said Tired Brain in a sleepy voice, "my doors are closing. I need rest to put your day away like neat little books."

Maya rubbed her eyes. "But I have so much to learn! I can keep going. I will finish now." She offered Tired Brain a cup of warm tea, but Tired Brain's eyes drooped. "I can stay up too," he mumbled, but he wobbled and fell into a tiny nap on her notebook.

Maya stayed awake. Pages and pages of notes camped across her bed like a paper camp. Her pencils marched back and forth. She rehearsed facts again and again. When the first light of morning touched her window, her eyelids felt like heavy curtains.

At school, Maya sat at her desk with the test before her. She looked at the first question and—nothing. The words seemed to hide. Her fingers fumbled with her pencil. Tired Brain peeked out from behind her ear. He was even smaller now, slow and fuzzy. "I can’t find the answers, Maya," Tired Brain whispered. "My shelves were never able to tidy the night. I was too tired to tuck your memories in neat places."

Maya felt a tear. She knew she had tried so hard. "But I stayed up all night!" she said sadly. Her teacher smiled kindly and said, "You worked hard, Maya. Remember, sometimes working includes taking care of yourself. Try sleeping well tonight and come back with fresh eyes." The teacher's words were gentle as a blanket.

That evening, Maya climbed into bed early. Rested Brain arrived like sunrise—bright, warm, and humming with tiny lights. Rested Brain had arms full of glittering file folders. "Come on in, Maya," sang Rested Brain. "I will tuck your memories into their proper places while you dream. Sleep helps fix things so you can find them later."

Maya slept and dreamed of glowing books and friendly numbers dancing into neat shelves. In the morning, she woke up with energy. Rested Brain winked and clicked a tiny lock. "All set!" he said. At school the next day, Maya opened her book and the answers came back like sunbeams. She smiled as numbers and facts stepped out of their neat shelves, ready to help. Remembering felt easy and calm. Maya hugged her notebook that night. "I learned a lesson the right way," she said. Tired Brain yawned one last time and waved goodbye as Rested Brain glowed by the window. "Rest is part of work, not the opposite," Maya whispered, and she slept soundly, ready for her next big day.
