Their first plan was to bake cupcakes for the village. Gruff hummed while he measured flour with two big wobbly hands. He sprinkled sugar like a snowy hill and then sneezed sending flour on his own nose. Nibbles flapped below with the eggs. Careful he squeaked. He reached slipped and splat an egg landed on the cat who had come to watch. The cat licked her whiskers and purred. Everyone laughed.

By the time Hattie stirred the batter the kitchen was a dance of giggles and goo. Maybe we should make extra frosting Hattie suggested and her wand swirled a tiny cloud of sparkles that smelled like vanilla. The cupcakes came out lopsided but piled high like little mountains. Gruff wrote a sign: FREE CUPCAKES! His handwriting looked like a river.

Then up in an elm a kitten mewed. It had climbed too high and could not come down. Hattie s eyes lit up. We can help she said. Gruff stretched his long arms and made a soft ladder from his own shoulders. Nibbles flapped and scared a friendly breeze that rustled the leaves. The kitten slid gently into Gruff s big careful hands.

The child who had hidden peeked out and saw the kitten safe. She came forward timid at first then brave. Thank you she whispered taking a frosting smudged cupcake. She took a bite and grinned. Others followed. By the end of the day the square was full of crumbs cupcakes and new friends. Gruff tripped once when someone hugged him but he laughed and hugged back. Nibbles accidentally put his wing in the honey jar and came out sticky as a pinata to everyones delight. Hattie taught the children how to paint with a broom. The bad guys were no longer called that. They were called helpers bakers and friends. And as the sun sank like a golden cupcake Gruff whispered It feels nice to try. They learned that trying and being kind matters more than being perfect. Mistakes made the best stories and kindness made the best friends.
